Entry 4

Alaska young would always ask that question,
and once she died people started to put
everything together that she had said including
this and realized that she kinda did want to die.
I chose Looking for Alaska because John Green wrote this book and he also wrote The Fault in Our Stars, which I absolutely loved and could hardly put it down. I was hoping I would feel the same way by reading Looking for Alaska, to my surprise I was. I kept wondering what was going to happen next, mainly to Alaska. John Green has this way of pulling you into the story and I have only felt that way with one other author, Nicholas Sparks. I defiantly want to read more books by John Green because he makes them about life and all the ups and downs in life instead of a fantasy. Don't get me wrong I love a perfect story but sometimes it's good to change it up a little bit. I didn't find any personal connection between myself and the novel but that is because I don't break the rules like the teens in the book do. They would party, drink, smoke and play pranks which I would never in a million years think to do. The only connection is that I am in high school just like they are. I think anyone who likes nonfiction books would like this book because it's something that could possibly happen in real life. I think girls would like this more than guys because there is some slight romance in it. This book also has some mystery if you like mysteries you will like this, even though I don't like so mysteries I still really liked this book.

Entry 3

When I read the following couple of paragraphs I almost couldn't believe what I had just read. This is why I chose it as one of the most hooking parts of the book. '"Please sir," I said. "Can we please wait for Alaska?" I felt all of them staring at as, trying to understand what I now knew, but didn't quite believe.

The Conell, Alaska and Pudge
The Eagle looked down and bit his lower lip. "Last night, Alaska Young was in a terrible accident." His tears came faster, them. "And she was killed. Alaska has passed away."'

While reading this part of Looking for Alaska it grabbed my attention because it's the first part in the 'after' section, so I was finally able to see what the 'before' section was leading up to. Although I did have my predictions as to what happened to Alaska throughout reading, I thought she had gone missing and ran away to her boyfriend because she felt bad that she cheated on him. I was somewhat correct in my prediction but I did not think he would have died. The whole book leads up to this part and once you read it it's a huge surprise because you finally find out what happened to Alaska, but you still keep wondering what is going to happen in the remainder of the book.

Entry Two

I can already see changes in the characters personality's as the book goes on, and it is quiet interesting to see those changes based on the people they hang around with. The characters change just as much as a real person would if they started hanging out with a new group people because its natural for people to want to fit in.
  • And that is exactly what Miles(aka Pudge) is going through when he changes high schools. He used to be the kid no one talked to and he had no friends but once he moved schools he met his roommate 'The Colonel' he quickly made friends, but not necessarily with the right people. When his parents dropped him off they had told him to not smoke or drink or do anything illegal. What is the first thing his roommate has him do? They go down to the end of the hall to meet Alaska, they talk with her for a bit and then buy some cigarettes from her and that is where it all started. Soon after that he was sneaking around with Alaska and The Colonel smoking and drinking as well as playing pranks. When Miles (Pudge) changed school all he wanted to do was make new friends and get good grades, and so far he has done just that.
  • The Colonel on the other hand knows he way around and how to break the rules without getting in trouble. Even though he also cares about school, and would like to keep his 4.0 GPA. The Colonel would also like to help his mom out but right now does not have enough money to do so. He says one night that the best day of his life will be when he can buy his mom a house with all expenses paid on it. He acts all tough but he also has a sweet side to himself that I think will start to shine though in the After section of the book.
  • Alaska has quiet the character and acts exactly like any teenage girl would. Except her past plays a huge part on how she acts and responds to things. Alaska also has a serious boyfriend of whom she says she loves and will never cheat on but i suspect something will happen between Miles and her and that is where the after part will come in. Alaska loves to read and constantly asks this question "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth?" and I think her main want or desire in life is to some how find an answer to that question and i have a feeling she will do anything to try and find an answer.
This is a different cover and I think it
really represents Alaska because more
towards the end of the book you find
out the significance of the daisy.
As I kept mentioning above about the After part of the book that is how this book is structured. It doesn't have chapters instead it has two big sections a before and an after. In these sections on each new day it will say something like "one hundred eight days before" or "thirteen days after". I found this structure to be very engaging because I keep wondering before what, and that really has pulled me in as a reader.

Entry One

For my summer reading book I chose to read Looking for Alaska by John Green, who also wrote the novel The Fault in Our Stars. When I  started reading Looking for Alaska I could hardly put it down which is nothing like me... especially during summer. I had to take a break from reading so I could make predictions before I got too far. While reading the same question repeated through my mind and that it 'before what?', because instead of chapters Green says something like "one hundred nine days before" and I keep wondering before what, what is going to happen. With that I think that someone is going to die and something really bad is going to happen to them, or maybe even disappear. I have a feeling it will be Alaska because the title of the novel is Looking for Alaska so I think something will happen to her I'm just not quite sure what. I have just finished reading The Fault in Our Stars also written by John Green and I have found a connection between these two books. Even though John Green wrote both of these there are still many different things but one very similar thing that I noticed and that is that Green does not sugar coat real life and he makes his book how real life is instead of like most books that end in a happy fairytale way like most books do. That is why I have really enjoyed reading both Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars.

A letter to the Author

Si and his wife Christina
Dear Silas Robertson (also know as Si),
I am a big fan of the show Duck Dynasty and so is my sister. In fact, I bought her a Willie bobble head for her birthday last year and she also got a duck call for graduation last year. You could say we are pretty big fans. Anyway I have really enjoyed reading your book Si-Cology 101! I love how you tell stories up until now and how you start from when you were a child moving towards college, enlisting in the war, meeting your wife and having children! But your stories about each of those things always make me laugh! Especially the one about your tea cup because anyone who has seen Duck Dynasty knows very well that you never put your tea cup down. Im curius as to why you have made a facebook page and twitter for your tea cup but I find that very amusing. I also found it interesting how much you enjoyed being in the army to the point where you moved your whole family to Germany  and had your two children there! I also loved how you live your life through God, like when your wife Christina couldn't have children and you said "'If God wants us to have children, we'll have children. If he doesn't want us to have children, we'll adopt some kids'"(Roberston 147). I also enjoy reading this book because you have such a strong writters voice which makes it much more enjoyable to read your hilarous stories! Great book and great stories, I can hardly put it down!

Final Blogging Assessment in English 1B

Text-to-Self Connection

I can honestly say I would have never thought I would be able to make a connection to Si. I mean he wears camouflage everyday while I would prefer to wear a dress. He is able to hunt, which we all know I would not be able to hunt for the life of me. But I was reading a chapter he wrote about snakes- funny thing is is that he is afraid of snakes- which you would think if you are in the woods everyday you would get over that fear but apparently not. This is what Si said, "As you may can guess, I don't like snakes. The only good snake is a dead snake! If anyone tries to mess with me when it comes to snakes, they're going to have a fight on their hands."(Robertson 43) when I read this I thought this is exactly like me. You can ask any of my friends I am deathly afraid of snakes (to the point where I can't even look at a picture of one)! I couldn't agree with Si more about the only good thing about a snake is when its dead! If I see a snake I will freak. period. It could be in a cage and I would still run away in fear! I don't know how Si does it!Even though he has to face his fear of snakes everyday and has been bitten 27 times I can still connect to his fear.

I also noticed some verbal irony (sarcasm) while reading that chapter. Si says, "Northwest Louisiana, where we grew up, is one of the few places in the United States that is home to all four of the venomous snakes of North America: the copperhead, cottonmouth, coral snake, and rattlesnake. We're even blessed to have two kinds of rattlesnakes: the canebrake and the eastern diamondback. Boy, aren't we lucky?"(Robertson 44) obviously he's being sarcastic when he says they are blessed to have two kinds of rattlesnakes- considering he is scared of snakes I doubt he's happy about that. Also the last sentence in that quote "Boy, aren't we lucky?" he's not saying they are lucky he is using sarcasm once again to get his point across that he's not happy Northwest Louisiana is home to all four venomous snakes that live in North America! :)

Text-to-Self Connection

I realize that I have already made a connection to this book but I found another and I couldn't help but share it! I also can't believe I was able to connect to this book again since Si is so much different from me! This connection is a little different than my previous one though. Si was just starting out in the military and he was sent to Vietnam, he had just arrived and some of the soldiers gave him advice on how to survive. One of the most important things they said "was to make sure all of my personal belongings were locked down at all times because the Vietnamese loved to steal from Americans". I was a little amused by this because lately people have been steeling stuff from the girls locker room including phone cases, clothes bags and a lot of other stuff. People in the locker room have never locked up our stuff because we feel like we can trust everyone, but in reality you can't fully trust anyone because anyone can walk in the locker room while we are practice and take our stuff. I was just as shocked as Si was when he found out people will steal your stuff because I grew up learning the same this he did: that stealing was bad and against the law. Here is a little lesson you can learn from this: always lock up your stuff just it case because you can never trust everyone!!

The best thing about my book is...

that (Uncle) Si uses his voice in his writing so it sounds like him. Whenever I read his crazy insane stories I can picture him saying it because he sounds like he would when watching the show. I have also noticed that just because it is a book that doesn't stop him from using his signature sayings including "Hey" and "Jack". One this that is not like Si in the book is the spelling and grammar (but thanks to the help of Mark Schlback all his grammar is correct in the book.) I just read a chapter in the book about Si and how he does not like school and how he didn't want to go to college but his parents made him- even though he only went for one year all he did was party. But as soon as finals came around the corner him and his friend realized they had to do well on exams so they got all the notes they had missed for a month (they skipped class all of the time) and they studied for 72 hours straight before their finals. And somehow Si ended up doing really well on them too, but still didn't go back for a second year instead he was enlisted in the army and was sent to Vietnam the next year. That's as far as I have gotten but the book keeps getting funnier and funnier because Si's stories are full of humor and dumb things him and his brothers have done!

Why I chose this book!

After I finished reading The Lucky One (which is an amazing book by the way- you should read it) I decided to take a break from Nicholas Sparks books- I know its crazy, I never thought I would say those words. I chose to read Si-Cology by Si Robertson (with Mark Schlabach) I know what your thinking, how do you go from Sparks books to books about people from the A&E hit TV  show Duck Dynasty. Well I will tell you. My family (mostly my sister, my dad and myself) all love the show duck dynasty and all of the people on the show- we especially love Si. I had put this book on my Christmas list and when I opened up it I was the happiest girl in the world at the time (I know its weird) its my favorite present I got for Christmas- hard to believe right? well its true. I even started reading it that night. So far I love the book because it sounds exactly like Si and all of his catch phrases he uses, for example "Hey!" "Hey Jack" now in his book he even says (which he says on the show too- if you have seen it) "Hey can mean anything. It can mean yes, it can mean maybe and it can mean no. Hey, it could mean next week. The bottom line is, you have to understand "Hey" to understand me."

Krista Ramsey Post

I chose Newlyweds spend first year raising groom's twin sisters because it sounded like a really touching story. Its about a couple that adopted the grooms (Ryan) 8 year old half twin sisters, Isabel and Elizabeth. Their mom had passed away after she had a seizure which then cased her to fall over into the road and get hit by a car, the twins father was in jail at the time. All the kids needed was love and some understanding and their stepbrother and his wife (Megan) did just that.

The most well written line in this column is "And the twins – who have known their share of sorrow – are grateful for the joy.". I chose this as one of the most well written lines in this article because I think it really pulls everything together and shows how they have gotten better without reading everything. Ramsey also uses "-" in her writing which could represent the change the twins have gone though, sorrow to joy in this sentence. Ramsey's style is sad at first but grows happier as you read more about how much Ryan and Morgan have done to make sure the girls have everything they need to be successful and happy, and that's what it shows in that quote as well.

I think Ramsey's writing style is flowery and elaborate because she always pulls in the reader in an interesting way and not a boring staccato way. She also talks to the reader by saying "you, him, they". For example in Ramsey: For better vision, kids need time outdoors she grabs the reader right away "You see it all the time. Your teenager at the dinner table, waiting for his checkup at the orthodontist’s office, sauntering to his car – continually hunched over his smartphone or iPad." I don't know about you but this really catches me because I can relate to this... well I'm the one doing it not the parent.

Book Review: The Lucky One

Book Review: The Lucky One

I really did enjoy reading this book, last weekend you could hardly get me to put the book down. My parents even started to wonder what had happened to their daughter Madison (I don't read a lot) but when I find a good book I read  a lot! After I finished the book I also wanted to watch the movie so my friend came over last night and we watched The Lucky One! The movie was also really good but there were some parts that were different from the book that bothered me a little bit but I was able to look past that! I'm having a difficult time rating this but I think I would give it a 4.5 out of 5 because it was just like any other classic Nicholas Sparks book, guy meets the girl, they fall in love, something tears them apart, they make up, ends happily ever after. Don't get me wrong I LOVE his books but sometimes he has to change it up a bit maybe? I don't know that's just my personal opinion. As I mentioned in my last post how I began to like how there was a different character each chapter that is now probably one of my favorite parts of the book because you were able to see each characters thoughts and actions through there point of view and I really enjoyed that. I also like how everything connected and flowed through the story. Sparks always does a great job with romance books. I'm thinking about reading The Longest Ride by him next?! Does anyone have any other suggestions? If so, comment them below! :)

Theme developent throughout The Lucky One

Beware, this might be a long post! Oh my gosh, where to start?! When I first started reading The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks I'll be honest I wasn't impressed with the book. I didn't like how each chapter was a different character because I wanted to keep reading about that same character, so I would read a chapter about a character and then stop reading because the next chapter was a new character. Well 301 pages later I can't put the book down (I'm going to have to tonight though when Kentucky plays at 8:49, GO CATS!) to my surprise I have to grown to really enjoy reading about a new character each chapter, it keeps me wondering and its nice to see each characters point of view. I only have 84 pages left to read and there is still a lot I'm hoping will happen... like what's going to happen with Logan and Elizabeth and is Clayton going to try to tear them apart? it sure seems like it, but come on in a Nicholas Sparks book in the end (if you have ever read one of his books) you know there will be a happy ending, its almost like a fairytale and everything works out after something try's to tear them apart, oh yeah that brings me to my post:

If you happened to have read my previous post Most Important Line from The Lucky One you should already know the story behind the picture. But that picture hasn't gone away yet... and I'm not quiet sure it will anytime soon. Anyway that picture of Elizabeth plays a huge role in the theme (I mean it has to, without that picture there would be no story). Logan's friend had told him that it was his destiny to find the girl that was in the picture, Logan thought that was non sense at first... but look where he is now... coincidence, I think not! With that I think the theme of The Lucky  One is to go with your fate or destiny and don't fight it or deny it. I think that part of Logan walking from Colorado to North Carolina was doing just that, going with the flow I guess you could say- not overthinking just doing. I think this is the main theme that that is guiding Sparks decision within the plot because without the picture there would be no story and without him going to look for the women in the picture there would be no story. Also this picture does both pull them closer when Elizabeth doesn't know he has the picture and pull them apart when Elizabeth finds out that Logan has a picture of her- not just any picture, the picture of her that she gave to her brother while he was serving in Iraq. I mean come on if you were in her position wouldn't you be a little creeped out too? I sure would be. I have a feeling this theme will keep playing a role in the story since I'm assuming Logan and Elizabeth will end up together in the end because it is there destiny to be together!! :o)

If you are interested here is a line the The Lucky One Movie Trailer, Nicholas Sparks and some of the actors talk about the book and movie... they even talk about destiny!!

Most important line from The Lucky One

The Picture of Elizabeth Green that Logan Thibault
found while serving in the Marines.

The most important line from chapter 6 (Thibault):

"Thibault swallowed. Who is she?
Beth Green, they said. She's a teacher at Hampton Elementary and lives with her grandma in the house at Sunshine Kennels.
Beth Green. Or, more accurately, Thibault thought, Elizabeth Green."

Information you might want to know: Logan Thibault found a picture of a women while serving in the Marines, he didn't know who it was but ever since he found the picture he has been lucky. (the picture above is from the movie The Lucky One). Once he was done serving in the Marines he went to find the girl that was in the picture. He walked all the way from Colorado to Hampton, North Carolina to find her.

Why this quote is important: I chose this quote to be the most important because this where Logan Thibault figures out where the girl in the picture is and what her name is. The following day Thibault when to Sunshine Kennel to apply for a job which is when he meets Beth or Elizabeth Green. I think the picture will have a much larger roll in the story as I get further into the book. Logan and Elizabeth might start to develop feelings for each other (its a Nicholas Sparks book of course there has to be some romance!), but I also think that Beth's ex- husband might try to pull them apart because that's what he does with any other guy Beth likes.

Right or Wrong?

The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks

Even though I have just started this book there is already a character who doesn't quiet seem normal. His name is Thibault and he is French but has lived in America his whole life. He was an army brat until about age 15 when his dad died two years after retiring form the marines.  Thibault knew he wanted I good education and follow in his fathers footsteps so he went to Colorado University and the enrolled in the Marines. He went to training and then was sent off. While serving in the Marines he found an odd picture of a girl with a shirt that said 'lucky lady' on it. He figured that it was someone's and put it on the bulletin board and no one took the picture. After a while he took the picture for him self and put it in his pocket. He went to play picker with some friends and he won pretty much every game and at that point he knew it was all because of the picture. Years later he still has the picture in his pocket, and he still a very lucky because of it. Do you think it was right for him to keep the picture or do you think he should have left there for the owner to fine? I'm assuming the picture will have a much larger roll in the book as I progress through the book and it will bring him more luck, unless he looses it of course. Tell me if you think he made the right or wrong decision below.

Blog Reflection

When rereading through my blog post I have found that I could have done a bit more of analysis while reading and writing my blog posts. Although I do have one post about Travis Parker the main character in The Choice: Character Analysis Blog Post. Even though this is not my best post I have done I think it some pretty good analysis. In my character analysis I did give some examples that occurred in the book, one think that I did lack though was quotes which i think could have made the analysis much stronger. Over all I do think I need to go more in depth when writing my blog posts.

Next trimester  I would like to branch out in my reading. I feel as if I'm in a box trapped with Nicholas Sparks books, don't get me wrong  I love his books and I enjoy reading them but it wouldn't hurt me to branch out a little bit and try something new. I have thought about reading Mockingjay and may The Fault in Our Stars since my friend loved it so I might give it a shot. When it comes to quantity and consistency in reading I think I need to read more during the week and read more books throughout the trimester. When it comes to my writing  I can definitely improve upon my analysis skills, that has always been a weakness of mine when it comes to writing. I think if I work on it and really try to find meaningful quotes and dig deeper into the meaning. Maybe I should try using TIQA when writing quote analysis. In conclusion, next trimester I am going to try to read more books and read more during the week as well, and when it comes to writing I will try to focus more on meaning and go more in depth in my writing!

The Choice Book Review

200709-the-choice
I can't even explain to you how much I love this book, it is truly amazing and I cannot believe it has not been turned into a movie yet! Although that may not be saying much coming from me since pretty much all I read are Nicholas Sparks books. But he does a great job of pulling you into the story and really feeling for the characters which is why I can get through his book quickly. He is an amazing romantic book writer and really knows how to pull at the readers heartstrings which is another reason I love his books. As I have said in my past couple of posts The Choice is very similar to The Notebook so if you enjoyed The Notebook you would also enjoy The Choice.

Book Review

I would give The Choice a 5 out of 5 stars. After the first 2 chapters I couldn't put the book down and after each chapter it left me wondering 'what's going to happen next?' which made me want to keep reading. I would say to make a reader wonder what's going to happen next the whole book it has to be a pretty good book. With there being to problems Travis and Gabby face it really pulls in the reader and I enjoyed that part of it. Although the book does really pull at your heartstrings towards the end but it has a really happy ending. I would suggest this book to any one who enjoys reading love stories with a little bit of heartbreak. Or if you enjoy Nicholas Sparks books in general!

Connecting The Choice and The Notebook + some

The Notebook and The Choice

The book was split up into two parts and in each part there was an obstacle that either Travis or Gabby was faced with. Although the main obstacle was in part two the first obstacle was still very important when it came to Travis and Gabbys relationship. The Choice can be compared to The Notebook because they have a similar plot and outline. In The Notebook Allie and Noah were pulled apart by Allies fiancĂ© but eventually made it through and were able to get married, later to be faced with the fact that Allie got Alzheimer's but Noah was able to make it through that as well. The Choice is very similar, in part one Gabby is faced with the decision of Travis or Kevin, and in part two there is a medical decision just like in the Notebook but I wont go into that because it would give it away.

The Choice.... with the choices they are faced with!

In the first part Gabby and Travis meet but Gabby has a boyfriend Kevin who she claims she loves, But when Kevin goes on a business trip Travis invites Gabby to go out parasailing with him and his friends she agrees with a nervous feeling but goes anyway. She really enjoyed parasailing with Travis and his friends but eventually it was time to go back to the house which is when Travis invited Gabby for dinner which she also agreed to. After they ate dinner Travis walked Gabby home and kissed her... but she has a boyfriend Kevin. She didn't want to admit that she felt something and she kind of liked so she walked away and he asked her if she wanted to do something tomorrow. So the next day they went on a motorcycle ride and had lunch together and then Gabby invited Travis over for dinner. They had dinner and that's when they feel I love, they spent every moment together they could. But Gabby was still dating Kevin, that's where the first choice came in: Travis or Gabby?
I don't want to give away too much because its an amazing book that I would suggest you read! But in part two Travis is faced with this question: How far would you go to keep hope of love alive?
Here is a question for you: How far should a person go in the name of true love?

Character Analysis

Travis Parker the main character has already gone through a couple minor changes. Quickly in the beginning we learned that Travis had everything a man could want. He lived in a small town and he had a waterfront house, he had a good job that he enjoyed and he a very kind loyal friends. But there was one thing he was still without, a women to love. All of his college friends are married and have kids, but Travis isn't to concerned about that. He feels that a women might 'cramp his style', his opinion quickly changes when a women named Gabby moves in next door. When they first meet he couldn't help but realize how beautiful she was. He began to kind of like her but soon found out she had a serious boyfriend. He is beginning to develop feeling for her and she is beginning to develop feelings for him as well. I'm not quite sure who she will choose in the end but I have a feeling that Travis is the right guy for her and she will realize that herself.
Nicholas Sparks does a great job at showing Gabby and Travis interact. He shows how they both find the other one attractive and how they have an interest in each other. Sparks also shows their thoughts, like when they are both talking he shows what they think about each other, how they find the other cute, or what they are wondering about the other person. You can tell Travis really likes Gabby but Gabby doesn't want to leave he boyfriend, Kevin even though you can tell there is something she likes about Travis.

Setting of The Choice

The Choice's main setting is in Beaufort, North Caroline. This happens to be the same setting as one of his other books A Walk to Remember. Sparks says it is a great place for a setting of a book because there is so much history in the town. Although I have only read a couple of chapters in The Choice there is still a very important specific setting in this book. In the beginning is at the main character Travis's house which is in a small neighborhood.
Beaufort, NC

He has a new neighbor living next to him, Gabby, who he has been nothing but nice to. But she is extremely mad at him because she is 99% sure that her dog is pregnant because of his dog. She believe it was his dog because he lets him run around the neighborhood during the day with no supervision. One night Gabby got up the courage to go and talk to her neighbor about her concern. She walked over to his house and as she was walking over she saw a ball fly right by her face and next thing she knew she was flat on the ground, which is when she realized a dog had ran into her. His dog. The dog that got her dog pregnant. This made her even more angry as Travis helped her up. Once she was up she told him they needed to talk and she went on and on and on not letting him say one word. He didn't mine though because he couldn't stop staring at her realizing how beautiful she was. This was the moment he first started to like her while she was sitting there at his house blabbering on.
