Theme developent throughout The Lucky One

Beware, this might be a long post! Oh my gosh, where to start?! When I first started reading The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks I'll be honest I wasn't impressed with the book. I didn't like how each chapter was a different character because I wanted to keep reading about that same character, so I would read a chapter about a character and then stop reading because the next chapter was a new character. Well 301 pages later I can't put the book down (I'm going to have to tonight though when Kentucky plays at 8:49, GO CATS!) to my surprise I have to grown to really enjoy reading about a new character each chapter, it keeps me wondering and its nice to see each characters point of view. I only have 84 pages left to read and there is still a lot I'm hoping will happen... like what's going to happen with Logan and Elizabeth and is Clayton going to try to tear them apart? it sure seems like it, but come on in a Nicholas Sparks book in the end (if you have ever read one of his books) you know there will be a happy ending, its almost like a fairytale and everything works out after something try's to tear them apart, oh yeah that brings me to my post:

If you happened to have read my previous post Most Important Line from The Lucky One you should already know the story behind the picture. But that picture hasn't gone away yet... and I'm not quiet sure it will anytime soon. Anyway that picture of Elizabeth plays a huge role in the theme (I mean it has to, without that picture there would be no story). Logan's friend had told him that it was his destiny to find the girl that was in the picture, Logan thought that was non sense at first... but look where he is now... coincidence, I think not! With that I think the theme of The Lucky  One is to go with your fate or destiny and don't fight it or deny it. I think that part of Logan walking from Colorado to North Carolina was doing just that, going with the flow I guess you could say- not overthinking just doing. I think this is the main theme that that is guiding Sparks decision within the plot because without the picture there would be no story and without him going to look for the women in the picture there would be no story. Also this picture does both pull them closer when Elizabeth doesn't know he has the picture and pull them apart when Elizabeth finds out that Logan has a picture of her- not just any picture, the picture of her that she gave to her brother while he was serving in Iraq. I mean come on if you were in her position wouldn't you be a little creeped out too? I sure would be. I have a feeling this theme will keep playing a role in the story since I'm assuming Logan and Elizabeth will end up together in the end because it is there destiny to be together!! :o)

If you are interested here is a line the The Lucky One Movie Trailer, Nicholas Sparks and some of the actors talk about the book and movie... they even talk about destiny!!

  1. I read this book and saw the movie, and I couldn't agree with you more. You are totally right in everything you said, especially about the picture and destiny. This is probably one of my favorite Sparks books:)
